Welcome: Where We Stand and Where We're Going

SPIN Academy staff will lead a brief welcome and introductions to the event, the on-site team, and participants. Cathy Montoya of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights will lead a grounding discussion about the South’s unique history and political culture, and the current legislative landscape as it relates to immigrants and immigration policy.

Organizational Reputation as a Strategic Asset

Holly Minch of LightBox Collaborative leads a workshop to help participants articulate their organization’s core promise to its constituents, and demonstrates how the elements of an organization’s identity relate to strategic direction and communications.

Campaign Communications Strategy

Effective communications are built on sound strategies that help you maximize your limited resources and achieve your goals. A solid communications plan sets you up for success by outlining a powerful, proactive strategy for your campaign or organization. This workshop presents a framework for communications planning, from goal setting and audience identification to message development and engagement strategies.

Mentor Group Check-ins

At the beginning of the Academy, each participant is paired with a mentor who has similar professional interests and the experience to offer expert guidance as participants apply the lessons from each session to their organization’s work.

Participants and mentors lead 15-minute TED-style talks on communications topics identified through the application process.

Participants are invited to visit with their mentors and connect with each other during this informal study hall & peer networking period.

Guided Hike to Amicalola Falls

Join Robert Bray and a park ranger for a .25 mile walk to the top of Amicalola Falls – the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi. For those adventurous enough, you can walk down all 425 steps to the overlook.

Messaging for Immigration-related Issues

This session will share best practices in message development for social change communications, with a focus on messages for immigration-related issues based on the latest public opinion research.

Option 1: Social Media

Social media has given immigrant communities and their allies the means to tell their own stories directly to the world. In this session, we will look at what your nonprofit can learn from recent online campaigns. We’ll discuss how you can integrate social media tools into your work. Our training will include hands-on skills building in creating and curating digital content like photos, video, audio and blogging. Participants will leave with a solid understanding of what to do next when they return home.

Option 2: What's Your Opinion?

Op Eds (signed pieces that appear opposite the Editorial page in newspapers) are a powerful tool for getting your message out. They allow you to control the message precisely and reach influential opinion leaders in your community. You’ll learn how to craft and place them in this engaging workshop.

Option 1: Developing Relationships with the Media

Participants will learn the basics of pitching news and developing relationships with gatekeepers of information including reporters (including citizen journalists), editors, producers and news directors.

Option 2: Spokesperson Skills

Learn about the radio landscape and how to be an effective spokesperson in this medium. Put your skills to the test with interview exercises and improve your ability through immediate feedback from trainers and peers in this lively session!

Storytelling for Change

Storytelling is one of the most important skills for any communicator for change. This workshop will explore the latest thinking about the most effective story models for building the constituency for your work and changing hearts and minds on your issue.
